Positive Results
Students develop, explore and refine their economic assumptions through the writing and presenting process, which also broadens their understanding of the macroeconomic or microeconomic content and their ability to think critically. The grading rubrics have a specific category: critical thinking which measures the students’ ability to analyze own and others' economic assumptions and evaluate the relevance of contexts before presenting a point of view about any economic problem.

Critical Thinking Statement in Syllabus:
In my classes, I encourage students to think critically via active learning. Therefore, students are challenged to not just engage in rote memorization of the material but to apply and analyze the information they have learned in order to resolve problems on their own without needing the book or their lecture notes to provide them with an exact answer. Kelly Caffery, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Psychology Department of Social Sciences |
"As a result of collaborating with ... this committee, I have requested that we change our nursing definition of critical thinking to be more congruent with interdisciplinary standards and more broad based. Proposed change: “Critical thinking in nursing is an essential component of professional accountability and quality patient care. It is a deliberate and disciplined process requiring the nurse to assess diverse and complex problems by employing skill in communication and cognitive techniques such as; questioning, interpretation, analysis, discrimination, reasoning, intuition, synthesis and judgment. It also requires that the nurse be aware of biases including egocentricity and sociocentricity that can be a barrier to critical analysis. The skills and habits of critical thinking evolve and are dynamic and progressive. The intellectual integrity and perseverance that results from critical thinking is a trans-formative process, allowing the care provider to continually improve quality of care.” (Tobi Schelin, Nursing / Retired / Indian River State College)
"Thinking critically about a topic or concept should present a discussion that identifies assessment, application, reflection, evaluation, self-regulation, synthesis and analysis. The challenge for professors is to identify a measurement tool that effectively evaluates a student’s ability to think critically. "

"Critical thinking, often viewed as a progressive part of advanced learning, is really about application of basic concepts to more advanced approaches. This has been useful with my teaching, as I start with elementary information which evolves into more complex."

Comments from our Chair - John Carpenter: The first year was of course a learning experience. All participants, including myself, designed critical thinking assignments and rubrics for assessment. We all had some success and agreed that we had begun an important journey; we are using the tools again, a year later, and tweaking them for better results. Three members returned for a second year, including Rita Lindsay, chair of the math department, who is doing important work through the institute that involves defining critical thinking for a department whose designated learning outcome includes critical thought. Patrick Dyer, from Human Services, was so inspired that he returned to do more work and recruited John Donohue, Alexander Shelby, and Bryan Reuther. Because I was associated with critical thinking through the institute, I was asked to chair the Critical Thinking Professional Learning Community, one of seven groups under the Institute for Academic Excellence, directed by Jodi Robson. Consequently, the institute members are functioning as two entities, and Arlene Green has stayed on for a second year and stepped up to be co-chair of the learning community. Arlene has constructed a web page for the Institute (http://ct-iae-irsc.weebly.com/ ) and created an online drop box where the materials produced by the Institute can be accessed.
The excitement generated among Critical Thinking Institute members and the Institute’s crossover with the Institute for Academic Excellence has great promise for the perpetuation and influence of the work resulting from this Gladys Williams Wolf Endowed Teaching Chair. Members have also discussed the concept of an IRSC Certificate in Critical Thinking. Bruce Fraser has enthusiastically attended some meetings, and he and Sarah Mallone, who is an Institute member this year and also serves on IRSC’s General Education Committee, are looking at the role of critical thinking in general education curriculum. In short, the Critical Thinking Institute is poised to have some positive long-term effects on IRSC’s culture.
